Charles Bernstein '12 had a 1-month internship doing preliminary design engineering at Sikorsky (helicopter manufacturer) in Stratford, CT. Then worked 9 weeks at a summer camp in Maryland, on the Chesapeake.

Jordan Lopez '12 was in Savannah, GA for an internship with Gulfstream all summer.

David Thomas '12 researched in Cambridge with Harvard Physics Department HeadChristopher Stubbs on atmospheric attenuation in astronomy data and got sent to Mt. Hopkins in Arizona to test an experimental proto-type. David concluded his summer with a surf road trip through Southern California meeting up with brother Spencer Currie '11.

Steven Zipparo '12 worked at Army Research Labs at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD developing armor for the military.

Michael Gibson '13 stayed in the house over the summer and worked in a materials science lab at MIT studying two-phton lithography.

Paul Uche '13 worked in the MIT Ideation Lab, and conducted research on rapid prototyping methods. This involved web and graphic design. His group has come up with products that could potentially be sold at places like the MIT Museum. Outside of the lab, he spent 3 weeks in Toronto, exploring the city, and visiting family.

Brian Oldfield '13 spent the summer traveling to Panama and Puerto Rico as a part of the US Virgin Islands team to compete in Davis Cup and Central America and Caribbean Games. In addition, Brian also dedicated himself to a UROP at MIT's Electrochemical Energy Lab working on fuel cell catalysts.

Gabe Blanchet '13 worked as a summer camp counselor leading hiking and rock climbing expeditions in the White Mountains of New Hampshire before traveling to Chile to ski for the last two weeks before workweek.

Kevin Lang '13 worked as a lifeguard and an assistant swim coach all summer, with a few breaks to visit family in Ohio, go to a wedding in California, and attend BLTW.

Patrick Vatterott '13 spent his summer at the Boeing company in St. Louis working as a Software Engineering intern with the Launch Systems group for the Harpoon Missile. He also took time to attend BLTW.

Some of our alumni also had active summers and will be moving on to great things.

Ben Pope '08 finished his thesis (and master's degree) in course 2 and started working in the iPhone Product Design group at Apple, joining Phil Hum '06 who works at Apple, too.

Dom Kmita '10, Eric Reuland '10, and Mike Demyttenaere '10 visited South Africa this summer and attended three World Cup games, before visiting Holland, Belgium, France and Italy.

Jeffrey Mekler '10 was a finalist for the International Balfour award, and will return to MIT this fall for Grad school, as well as serving as Chapter Advisor to Alpha Theta.

Excitement among brothers is high, and we certainly anticipate a successful beginning to the fall semester.

Chapter pilots "Alumni Career Night" concept

Friday, March 19, 2010

On a recent Sunday evening, the chapter held a pilot "Alumni Career Night" that proved to be a great success.

A panel of five alums from various industries, types of careers and eras (ranging from the class of 1970 through 2003) discussed their current jobs, their career paths to date, lessons learned over the years, and advice for the actives about ways to think about careers and what one wants to do in life.

Three of the Alums joined the actives in person in the Library, while two of the Alums joined in remotely via video conference -- one from Colorado and one from Michigan. Each Alum gave a brief presentation, and then a Question and Answer session was held.

The Library was packed with active brothers, who thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the evening. It was particularly interesting to hear many common themes from the alums -- despite their varied industries, careers and eras at Alpha Theta -- particularly regarding the significant role that Alpha Theta played in their overall education, preparedness for and success in their various careers. Leadership development experience and the experience of working with others in general at Alpha Theta was something that each of the alums, independently, called out as being a very significant part of their overall MIT education.

Dinner with the local Alums in the Dining Room followed the panel discussion, and then a Chapter Meeting followed that.

Photos from the evening can be found here.

Given the great success of this test pilot of the "Alumni Career Night" concept, we're hoping to make it a regular event!

Class of 2012 Initiation Ceremonies

Monday, February 16, 2009

After a pledge program aimed to educate, integrate, and inspire the development of character, the pledge class of 2012 began their initiation on January 19th. The energy in the house was high as the reflective spirit of I-week captivated the brothers. At Alumni Tea on Wednesday January 21st, we had the honor of presenting David Ashley (Alpha Theta '73) with his well-earned Significant Sig Award and the pleasure of witnessing the life-long bond of brotherhood as David's big brother spoke about him. On the morning of January 25th, the events and traditions culminated beautifully with the admittance of ten new brothers into the Alpha Theta chapter of Sigma Chi:

Charles Raphael Bernstein
Andrew Warren Pierson
Jordan Todd Lopez
John Michael Walton
Bryan Matthew Beller
Eamon Michael Glackin
David Rees Thomas
Steven Matthew Zipparo
Ruaridh Reid MacDonald
Scott Erik Sundvor

I am very proud of these ten men and am looking forward to watching them grow and lead with the ideals that they have been taught and bring honor to our chapter and all of Sigma Chi.

State of the Chapter

Saturday, November 1, 2008

As summer came to a close three weeks before the start of classes to allow for Work Week, Orientation, and Rush, brothers flocked back to the house from all over the country and the world for another exciting year at the Institute. Chris Bukowski ('09) finally returned from studying a semester abroad in Spain, while Eric Reuland ('10) and Dominik Kmita ('10) finished up their internships in Germany. Upon the first morning of Work Week, Jeff Mekler ('10) began cracking the whip as the rest of the brothers revitalized the house for another long year of school. Many floors throughout the house were either refinished or replaced, all house surfaces were scrubbed and polished, a new Sigma Chi sign was painted, and a patch of water-damaged ceiling was repaired in the room designated for our RA, Amon Millner. As Work Week came to a close with beautiful weather and a spotless house, we were ready for some new pledges.

This year recruitment was led by Andrew Ji ('09). Rush Week brought a great deal of fun and excitement to the house, and the highlight of the week was our incredibly successful trip to the beach. Everybody enjoyed the warm, sunny weather as we played in the ocean, organized sports on the sand, and picnicked with rushees. Andrew's leadership and our brothers' enthusiasm at that event as well as throughout the rest of the week rewarded the chapter with ten talented and committed pledges. The pledges immediately began integrating into the house and taking great advantage of their new pledge room. They did not hesitate to forge bonds with brothers through interviews or learn about Sigma Chi through weekly pledge meetings. By October our Magister, Eric Reuland ('10), made sure the pledges had begun to acquire a deep understanding of the history, ideals, and traditions of Sigma Chi. Also, for the first time in recent history, Eric organized a house-wide camping trip geared towards fostering the bonds of brotherhood between brothers and pledges.

Throughout this semester, brothers have continued to strengthen our ties with MIT and the greater Boston community through social events and community service. In September, almost half of the chapter participated in the Alzheimer's Memory Walk to support the advancement of Alzheimer care and research. The event doubled as a chance to support a good cause and socialize with the sisters of the Sigma Kappa sorority.

The position of Songmaster was credited with extra responsibilities this term as our chapter created a new band. An electric guitar, a base guitar, the grand piano, and our new drum set make up the ensemble, but it is the brothers' exceptional musical talents and enthusiastic attitudes that make the band great. Although the band has yet to put on any shows, the brothers have promised to perfect their skills and possibly even write some original music by the end of this term.

All these positive contributions to the brotherhood would not have taken place without the great leadership of our officers this term. We have all been busy and diligent in our duties and have tried to set great examples for the pledges and all brothers. We officers cannot take all the credit, though, because we too are fortunate enough to have somewhere to go to when we need assistance. Ben Pope ('08), our very own International Balfour award winner, has come back this year as an MIT graduate student to act as our Chapter Advisor. He has proven to be a valuable source of knowledge about life, leadership, and Sigma Chi, and I am grateful for everything he has done and continues to do for our chapter.

After almost two and a half years at MIT, I am still amazed at how committed, close-knit, and successful our Alpha Theta chapter of Sigma Chi has always been. From community service and academics to intramural sports and the house band, our brotherhood and accomplishments have never been so meaningful and numerous. With a smile on my face and a badge on my chest, I can honestly say that I have never been so proud to be a brother of the Alpha Theta chapter of Sigma Chi.

Ben Pope '08 Wins International Balfour Award

Saturday, August 2, 2008

It is with great pleasure that I am able to report that Ben Pope (Alpha Theta '08) has just been awarded the International Balfour Award by the Sigma Chi International Fraternity!

The International Balfour Award is given each year to one undergraduate student, selected from among all Sigma Chi chapters, and honors that brother as Sigma Chi's most outstanding senior. It is thus a tremendous honor for Ben to receive this singular recognition from the Sigma Chi International Fraternity. The award was presented to Ben this past week at the Balfour Leadership Training Workshop, held at the University of Missouri.

Ben received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering (Course 2) earlier this year, and after working at Apple for the past 6 months (iPhone product design) he will be starting a Masters program at MIT this fall in Mech E. Ben is a truly accomplished and impressive young man. As just one example, those of you who were able to attend the 125th Reunion last year heard about his exciting trip to Antarctica as the Boy Scouts of America Antarctic Scout. During his undergraduate years, Ben served the chapter in many capacities including Consul, played on MIT's Ultimate Frisbee and Varsity Soccer teams, and participated in many other campus activities.

I'm very happy to report that Ben has just now started his new role as Chapter Advisor for Alpha Theta, so the chapter will continue to benefit from having Ben around.

Ben joins three other Alpha Theta brothers who over the history of the Sigma Chi fraternity have been awarded the International Balfour Award: Sam Towell '00, John Piotti '83, and Henry Schleinitz '61. We believe that this may be the most International Balfour Awards received by any Sigma Chi chapter. Congratulations, brothers! Certainly an accomplishment of which to be extremely proud. Please join me in congratulating Ben (bpope@alum.mit.edu) on receiving this great honor!

Chapter Updates

Sunday, April 27

The last few months have been a roller coaster of up and downs and hurdles for many individual brothers and the chapter as a whole, but as the school year winds down, everything has seemed to piece together perfectly.

The weekend of April 10-13 was MIT's Campus Preview Weekend (CPW). We housed around 10 pre-frosh at 532 Beacon Street, and we were able to meet and befriend many future MIT students who we would love to see at MIT during rush next year. On Friday night, we hosted the Sigma Chi Top Gun Party were we gave away free aviator glasses and played Top Gun - the 1986 movie starring Tom Cruise - on half a dozen TVs and monitors around the house. The library was stripped down and turned into a dance floor, which was packed with enthusiastic dancers all night.

On April 21, we co-hosted a Boston Marathon Day Party with Phi Sigma Kappa on Commonwealth Blvd. Numerous MIT students and Sigma Chis created a massive group next to the marathon course to cheer on Phillip Samayoa ('09), Caine Jette ('10), and Dominik Kmita '10) - three Sigma Chi brothers brave enough to run all 26.2 miles - as they pushed on through their final mile into Copley Square.

All our brothers are taking advantage of great opportunities this summer. Doug Halket ('09) and Scott Pollom ('09) are going to Chicago to work for a trading company. Eric Reuland ('10) and Dominik Kmita ('10) are flying to Munich, Germany and Dusseldorf, Germany, respectively, for different work opportunities. Other brothers are doing UROPS on the MIT campus or working for consulting firms in the Boston/Cambridge area and will be living at the house, which will be inhabited by just brothers and female summer boarders and should be a fun and relaxing experience for all.

Hopefully we can all finish the year strong with Sigma Chi elections next week, and finals and graduation in less than a month.

Sweetheart

Monday, December 3

We held our Sweetheart Ball two weeks ago on the 17th of November, celebrating our new 2007 Sweetheart, Teagan Andres. It was at the newly renovated MIT museum. We had a delicious dinner. We got to hear our brothers sing creative renditions of songs from our childhood. And we got to play with all the new "toys" and exhibits in the museum. Our dates were beautiful, and quite frankly, we all looked dashing.

From the MIT museum we took two yellow school buses to the Boston Ice Rink and ice skated until our toes and ankles started to bleed. The ladies were impressed by our ice skating talent. To top off the night we came back to the house for a refreshing and entertaining Champagne breakfast.

Sweatheart was incredible but now finals and the Holidays are coming up. Hopefully, we can power through the hard part so that we can quickly enjoy home, family, and a well earned break.

Good luck on finals and Happy Holidays!

Happy 125th Anniversary, Alpha Theta Sigma Chi!

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Just a quick note from the active chapter. Today marks a milestone for both our active chapter as well as MIT history. Alpha Theta turns 125 tomorrow, March 21, 2007. We were installed on that same day in 1882, the first permanent fraternity on MIT's campus. More information can be found on our chapter's website.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion in three weeks!

Consul's Corner

Monday, March 19, 2007

Dear Brothers,

The frigid winter weather has not dampened the spirits within 532 Beacon Street. The Spring semester has begun in earnest, and our brothers have thus far been both successful and enthusiastic. IAP saw our dispersal to a wide range of activities from working in externships or UROPs to traveling in South America or skiing in the Rockies. At the close of January, Magister Stephane Essama '08 oversaw an exceptional I-week, culminating in the Initiation of eleven outstanding men into our order.

At the beginning of the semester we received notification of our earning a spot on the Fall 2006 FSILG Honor Roll, an honor conferred on those Fraternities, Sororities and Independent Living Groups ranking in the top third in GPA. In addition, our academic success has continued with the acceptance of several of our seniors into prestigious graduate schools around the country. Best of luck to Brian Wilt '07, Daniel Scolnic '07 and Austin Ford '07 with their decisions!

Even as we reflect upon our successes, we are excited for our upcoming events. We eagerly anticipate hosting a celebration of our Chapter's 125th anniversary this April 13 - 16. The weekend is packed with excellent events highlighted by Saturday evening's formal ball. It is truly something special for the current actives to experience during our undergraduate careers.

Also, this spring has also seen our Chapter's officers excel. Past and current Quaestors Nicholas Haschka '08 and Douglas Halket '09 have collaborated to re-organize and streamline the House's financial structure. Community Relations Chair Daniel Scolnic '07 has mobilized our brothers to tutor underprivileged youth in the production and programming of autonomous robots with the Machine Science program. In addition, we are ramping up for a philanthropic date auction over MIT's Spring Weekend, headed by Eugene Jang '09.

In athletics, our brothers have ad success at all levels. Matthew Williams '07 led our intramural small-league dodgeball team to a runner up finish, and Aaron Doody '07 captained our undefeated hockey team (8-0). At the Varsity level, Ryan Dean '08 is captain of the conference champion Men's Volleyball team; he is joined on the team by Scott Pollom '09, Eugene Jang '09, Eric Reuland '10, Mike Demyttenaere '10, Caine Jette '10, and Troy Tamas '10. Jack Field '08 is once again captain of the MIT Sailing team and Luke Cummings '10 swam to a 6th place finish at the NCAA Championships with the men's 400 yard medley relay team, earning All-American accolades. In addition, Andrew Ji '09, Jeff Mekler '10, and myself are playing on the Ultimate Frisbee team with aspirations of competing in the national tournament.

I am proud to say that our chapter has distinguished itself through members that have become leaders on campus in both the academic and extracurricular realms. In addition, our house has established itself as a role model within the Greek community. We refuse to rest on our laurels, however, and look forward to continued growth and development this semester.

Welcome to the new version of the Alpha Theta Sigma Chi website, specially prepared to celebrate our 125th Anniversary Reunion. This section of the site provides an overview of the Reunion as well as schedule information and more Reunion details such as hotel accommodations. Please review this information and then register online!

Please help us spread the word about this great event to as many brothers as possible by filling in some of the missing email addresses for alumni and friends.

If you have a chance, maybe try to update your info, or even leave us a note about what you're up to. We always appreciate to hear what our alumni are up to.

This site also has many features to reacquaint you with the chapter and its active members. Please, check out the brand new section "The Chapter Today" to learn about the undergraduates that make up Alpha Theta, and don't miss the house tour of good old 532 Beacon. Also, for Alpha Theta's Centennial in 1982, Mark Robien '84 penned an impressive history of our chapter which has been posted here. In the weeks leading up to the reunion, the historians at Alpha Theta plan on highlighting historical documents from our past. As a taste of what's to come, perhaps check out a letter from Alden "Bat" Thresher which reminisces about the life of a student in the class of 1918! Dr. Thresher was a professor of economics at MIT and the director of MIT admissions from 1936 - 1961.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Reunion coordinators. Hope to see you in April!

Also, please check out pictures from the 120th Anniversary Reunion, held from April 12 - 15, 2002. For someone like me who hasn't ever experienced a reunion, it gives an exciting preview of what's to come!

Looking forward to seeing you all in three months!

In Hoc,

Brian Wilt
