Alpha Theta Chapter M.I.T. founded 1882 founded 1861 November 1, 1998 Minutes of the meeting of the Corporate Board, held October 10, 1998. The meeting was called to order at 7:09 PM in the Chapter House Library. Present: Dusty DeQuine (Fall Board Rep.), Karl Büttner (Board), D J Hershberger (RA), Gene Pyo (Work Week Mgr.), Phil Kim (Consul, Board), P K Hadley (Board), Mark Curtiss (Board), Tom Faust (Board), Josh Littlefield (Board). Minutes of the April 22, 1998, meeting were accepted as distributed. REPORTS Chapter Report - Phil Kim 1. Rush went very well, resulting in a strong class of nine pledges. 2. The Chapter recently hosted a successful BYOB party. They followed IFC guidelines strictly, and had no problems. The new IFC alcohol policy seems to be working well. All ILG parties have been BYOB so far, since no third-party vendor will provide liquor, due to insurance concerns. 3. MIT campus police are making the rounds more often. They stopped by during Work Week. 4. The Chapter is once again renting an apartment, for about $1600/month. There are two residents now, and there will be three next term. 5. The IFC formed an ad hoc committee in opposition to President Vest's freshman housing decision. 6. The Herbie's Forest trip was recently held, and went well, although the regional YMCA has sent an e-mail complaint about the work, to the dismay of the Chapter. Herb Mower is investigating. Resident Advisor Introduction - DJ Hershberger 1. We welcomed DJ as our first Resident Advisor, at least of the modern era. DJ said the RA training was very dorm-oriented, but he seems to have figured out the job, nonetheless. He is employed by the Corporation, as a non-cash compensation position. Treasurer Report - Tom Faust 1. The transition of treasurers is progressing. There is a new property tax bill which may be overdue from 10/1. The Corporation still has money. President Report - Mark Curtiss 1. Mark attended an AIFC meeting recently with Gene Bates, Neil Dorow, and the new MIT comptroller, Larry Bakow. He learned an interesting perspective on the recommendations of the Committee on Student Life and Learning with regard to freshman housing. This was really Vest's decision, but they generally agreed. Phil Kim reported that he learned in a discussion with some committee members at the IFC that the recommendation in the report was an attempt to influence the implementation of on-campus freshman housing, since it was clear Vest had decided it would happen. BUSINESS Work Week - Gene Pyo 1. Work week went well. They only worked seven hour days, but there was an extra work day due to rush starting a day late this year. They tiled the first floor pantry and laundry room with ceramic tile (these jobs came out pretty well). Lighting fixtures were replaced in the library, unifying the varied set of fixture that had been installed over the years. The bike room and weight room (ZLM) were redone. Ceiling fans were installed in the Mag. Room and in 4SF. Wall panels were re-stained on the zero floor. Lots of surfaces were polyurethaned, and the second through fourth floors were re-carpeted. There were problems with the installation, but the vendor was very responsive and the job was redone. The bar door wasn't improved, but the back door was. Finally, a very nice chandelier was installed in the entry way, which adds a nice element to the view from the first floor to the entry way. 2. Gene will prepare a formal report for the next meeting in order to get reimbursed by the Corporation. New Committees - Mark Curtiss 1. Mark wants to form some standing committees. We already have a physical plant committee, which we need to continue. We also should consider a renovation fund committed. The last renovation was about seven years ago. The capital systems audit report highlighted some significant work to be done, and we need to consider how we'll fund this work. The annual meeting of the Corporation, and the next board meeting, will be held on Tuesday, November 10. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM. Respectfully submitted, Joshua B.
